Blackwell’s Bookshop and Cerrie Burnell Spread Holiday Cheer to Demelza Hospice Care for Children
Young people who use Demelza Hospice Care for Children and who suffer from life limited and life threatening conditions were invited to join Cerrie Burnell, as seen on CBeebies, for a family story time at the Charing Cross Branch of Blackwell’s Bookshop to collect books donated through the Blackwell’s Wishing Tree campaign.
In an effort to give back to the London community Blackwell’s Bookshop launched a charity Christmas Wishing Tree campaign in their flagship Charing Cross Road branch. Blackwell’s invited children represented by Demelza to choose a book they would like as a gift to be hung on a tag on a wishing tree inside the shop, enabling customers to buy the book for the child.
In addition to receiving the books of their choice Blackwell’s invited a number of families who use Demelza’s children’s hospice to join them in store for a family story time session with Cerrie Burnell. All of the books donated for the children attending the story time were made by Blackwell’s customers.
Sarah Carter, Head of Care at Demelza’s hospice in Eltham said: “What a lovely idea the Wishing Tree Campaign is and we are very touched that Blackwell’s have chosen Demelza as the charity to benefit from this venture as well as inviting families to the story time.”
Television presenter Cerrie Burnell, struggled herself as a child with Dyslexia which left her unable to read until the age of 10. Speaking about the campaign Cerrie said: “All children deserve the chance to experience the magic of books. It was only through having people read to me throughout my childhood that I was that I was able to step into the world of stories. It was really wonderful and joyful to meet the children of Demelza and their parents who are so inspiringly positive. The Blackwell’s Wishing Tree Campaign is such a lovely idea and fantastic gift. Be sure to stop by the shop and pick a book to spread some Christmas cheer to the children of Demelza.”
Blackwell’s Wishing Tree campaign will continue through the end of December. Those wishing to bring to a bit of holiday cheer to children suffering from life limited and life threatening conditions can visit the Blackwell’s Charing Cross branch to select a tag and corresponding book.
